Enugu landslide causes water tank to fall on home, killing four relatives

At least four people from the same family are reported to have died in Nenwenta, in Awgu Local Council of Enugu State, after a water tank fell onto their house. The incident took place over the weekend after a landslide caused by heavy rainfall. The downpour is said to have weakened the base of the raised water tank, causing it to collapse onto the building. The deceased were identified as a man, his wife, his elderly mother and one of their children. The house was completely destroyed in the collapse. Emergency workers later rescued a four-year-old child alive from the rubble. A video of the scene that appeared online on Monday, September 21, showed residents gathered around the ruined building, weeping as rescue personnel searched through the debris. The Enugu State House of Assembly confirmed that four people died in the collapse. The lawmaker representing Awgu South State Constituency later raised a motion of urgent public importance over the incident. He described the tragedy as devastating and said the family had been trapped when the water tank collapsed on their home. He said the victims might have survived if the road connecting the affected communities had been passable, noting that the landslide made rescue operations difficult. He urged the House to compel the relevant government agencies to intervene urgently and restore access to Ugwueme and Nenwenta. Other lawmakers expressed sympathy with the constituency and agreed to write to the relevant authorities for immediate intervention.
