Abuja Police Hold Ex-Convict Over Attempted Car Theft

The Federal Capital Territory police command has taken an ex-convict into custody in connection with an alleged vehicle theft. Josephine Adeh, the command's spokesperson, said a distress call came in on September 15 about an attempted car theft on Tigris Crescent, Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja. A patrol unit from the Maitama Police Division was sent to the location without delay, according to Adeh, and officers found Mohammed Aliyu inside a vehicle as he allegedly tried to start it and drive off. Adeh stated that initial inquiries showed Mr. Ikechukwu had left his black Hyundai Santa parked while he went to an appointment at an office nearby. When he came back, he saw someone he did not know inside the car and sounded an alarm, drawing the attention of people nearby. Adeh added that additional investigation indicated the suspect had previously been arrested in two different car theft cases handled by the Garki and Zuba Divisions. He had served a prison term and was recently released from Keffi Prison in April 2026, she said. The suspect is still in custody, Adeh noted, and will be taken to court after the investigation is completed.
